Gearing up for 2017’s top home improvement trends
After a decade of so-so sales, new home construction and remodeling are finally on the upswing. According to Consumer Reports, a near record-breaking $317 billion will be spent on home improvement in 2017.
Kitchens are at the top of the spending list. Homeowners want modular appliances equipped with smart technologies they can command by voice or from remote locations. Some are opting for sleek, party-time cocktail bars built right in to the kitchen. Another popular in-kitchen device is a climate controlled, irrigated indoor gardening cabinet, with herbs ready to cut and cook. Countertops, faucets and tile are all due for a makeover. Gone are bright chromes and sparkling granite surfaces. This year, think honed matte finishes, marble and black stainless steel. Colorful subway tiles are a cute trend in smaller kitchens, too.
Bucking the earlier trend for full-scale home offices, remodelers are likely to go for pop-out docking stations around the house and a drop-down or pull-out desk for tackling quick tasks.
Smaller — but fancier — homes are making something of a comeback, with an eye to blending convenience and luxury. Homeowners are looking for flexible floor plans, energy efficient appliances, and — no surprise here — storage space. Homes are getting smarter, too, with a third of all new homes expected to have at least one connected device, be it a security camera, an air-quality or leak-detection sensor, or a high-tech home theater.
For those planning a remodeling project, finding a good service provider is a critical first step. Fortunately, there are a number of remodeling experts in the western suburbs that can turn a dream project into a reality, several of which are profiled on the following pages.
CHARLES VINCENT GEORGE ARCHITECTS
Whether enhancing a current home or creating a new residence, selecting an architect is a pivotal early decision in the building process. Finding a trusted, professional architect that can balance the quality, schedule and budget as well as the creative aspects of a home project is critical to a successful outcome.
At Charles Vincent George Architects, Inc., the goal is to exceed expectations by combining creativity and professionalism with responsiveness to clients’ ideas. From traditional to modern designs, the Naperville-based firm begins by exploring all options and presenting ideas that reflect the client’s personality and preferences.
Quality is a hallmark of the firm’s services, as evident in the initial design concepts as well as the smallest final details. Extensive, detailed drawings provide clients with confidence as well as peace of mind when construction begins, reducing
the need for change orders or work disruptions. Budgeting is also key, as staff work with clients on pre-bid estimates, bid negotiation and contract administration.
With every home project, Charles Vincent George makes it a priority to work within the client’s time frame, not its own. Their commitment is to welcome owners into their new or remodeled homes as early as possible.
RELIABLE HOME IMPROVEMENT
Known for cutting-edge design, excellent customer support and high-quality construction, Reliable Home Improvement is recognized as one of the premier home-remodeling firms in the western suburbs. Family owned and operated for 50 years, the Naperville-based company specializes in everything from bathroom and kitchen remodeling to designing and building custom home additions.
As a single-source service provider — from project management and design to scheduling and production — Reliable saves clients time and money by eliminating the need to contract multiple vendors. A proprietary job-scheduling system allows the firm to finish jobs up to one third faster than many competitors, without compromising quality or customer satisfaction.
Beyond being a resource for quality and expediency, Reliable Home Improvement is also known for being innovative, creative and progressive. Its staff understands that remodeling trends are always changing and customers’ priorities are constantly shifting as well.
To help customers keep up with the newest products and trends, Reliable boasts a 15,000-sq-ft showroom and design gallery. The showroom features full-size kitchens, bathrooms and other living spaces and is regularly updated to reflect the most current design trends and options.
“It’s our experience that our customers most appreciate from us,” says Director of Marketing Christine Ducato. “Our clients know they will not only get high-quality craftsmanship and design, but that their entire experience will be a positive one, from start to finish. That’s important, because remodeling projects take weeks, often months. There is a big element of trust involved, so it is critical to have a company with a proven track record that understands the full scope of what is involved.”
IMPERIAL KITCHENS AND BATHS
Imperial Kitchens and Baths is known for creating special living spaces that meet clients’ needs and budgets, from small powder rooms to dream kitchens.
Imperial’s experienced design team uses state-of-the-art design software, allowing clients to see in advance how a room will look when it is finished, so there are no surprises. Just as important, Imperial serves as contractor for its projects, employing top artisans in each construction field. Customer service is key; Imperial knows that living in a house that is under construction is stressful and the staff treats each home as though it is their own.
While kitchens and baths are Imperial’s specialty, the Brookfield firm provides design and construction expertise on a range of other projects, including room additions, master suites, basement remodels and wine cellars. Imperial also offers custom cabinetry and cabinet recovering services.
