International flavors shine in an all-vegan/vegetarian menu in Lisle
Fresh, flavorsome and unapologetically vegetarian, Manna Kitchen at 2801 Ogden Ave., in Lisle (630 536-8328) boasts a menu that is entirely plant based.
This is the vision of vegan enthusiasts, Shanti and Markus Schramm for a local, fast-casual restaurant serving healthful, organic dishes created to please veggie-heads and veggie-curious diners alike. Some selections are built upon American comfort food favorites. For the Mac ‘n’ Cheese, for instance, chef Kadek Supartini adds a creamy cashew sauce and tops the dish with mushroom “bacon” and parsley. The star ingredients of the Crispy “Crab” Cakes are jackfruit and heart of palm. The patty in the protein-powered Manna Burger is a blend of legumes, seitan (wheat gluten) and herbs. Sides include seasonal soups, sweet potato fries and German potato salad.
Other menu items are authentically eastern, like the Korean Bibimbap — a bowl that combines brown rice, smoked tofu and seasonal vegetables. The Thai Panang Curry blends sweet potatoes, tofu, string beans and Napa cabbage in a tangy coconut curry broth.
Desserts are house-made with organic ingredients and include a banana walnut brownie and a double-chocolate cupcake. There are organic coffees, teas and sodas, too.
