Named after SoGong Dong, a small, historic county in Seoul that has royal connections, this fast-casual eatery brings the treasures of South Korean cuisine to the western suburbs.
Recently opened at 18W066 22nd St. in Oakbrook Terrace (630 613-8133), SGD’s menu boasts bold flavors ignited by hot chile sauces. Popular as take-out or at the table are the signature bento boxes — beautifully compartmentalized portions of BBQ short ribs or chicken, beef or pork bulgogi (thinly sliced meats, stir fried with spicy marinade). Each comes with rice, Japchoe glass noodles, salad and dumplings.
There’s plenty to choose from outside the box, too. For starters, there are classic fried or steamed dumplings and spring rolls, as well as seafood and scallion pancakes.
Hearty Korean stews are served in hot stone bowls. They come loaded with ramen or udon noodles, hot kimchi sauce (made from fermented vegetables) and choices or pairings of seafood beef, pork, chicken or tofu. A fried egg on top is optional.
There are also five versions of Korean BBQ, including a pork belly specialty.
SGD offers a full take-out menu, also available at its location at 687 E. Golf Rd., in Schaumburg.Edit Module
