A vision of preservation, hand in hand with recreation, inspired the revitalization of an Illinois prairie landscape at The Preserve at Oak Meadows, a public golf course in Addison.
The ambitious project, completed in 2017, included restoring the area around Salt Creek where it flows though the 288-acre property. The site, owned by the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County, had been home to two golf courses, but was plagued with flooding problems. The new 18-hole facility provides for greater flood resistance and stormwater control, beautiful natural vistas, and a more hospitable environment for native plants.
Next comes a new clubhouse to replace a structure that was struck by lightning in 2009. In keeping with the environmentally friendly property, the clubhouse will feature a green roof, sustainably sourced wood, LED lighting and “bird glass” — which reduces the chance of birds flying into the surface. Solar panels are planned for a cart-storage building and the golf carts will be solar powered, as well.
