From the Fire into the Garden by Deborah Marqui
Deborah Marqui’s memoir began as a series of journal entries she jotted down to help herself make sense of a life-altering event — the shocking midlife diagnosis of terminal cancer. The book begins in a place of shock, fear and anxiety but transforms into a story of faith, inner strength and recovery.
As Marqui — an occasional gardener before her illness — sat on her porch after chemotherapy sessions, she became a keen observer of nature, noting the resilience of a spider web through rain showers or the determination of squirrels at play. She soon drew upon the restorative powers of nature to focus her body, mind and spirit onto a holistic path to health and spiritual wellness. The goal of the book is to help others live each day “in the moment” on their own paths to physical and spiritual wellness.
Deborah Marqui is the owner of Healing Gardens, a two-acre expanse of woodland and perennial gardens at Stone Hill Farm in St. Charles. She planted and nurtured the gardens as a haven open to those in recovery.
