Savory and sweet, with a focus on simple flavors, Red Poppy Bistro is a welcome addition to the Elgin casual-fare scene.
This bright, sunny breakfast and lunch spot located at 109 E. Highland Ave. (708 738-8306) seats 20 and, in warmer weather, tables will spill outdoors. Inspired by the street cafés of Europe, husband-and-wife team and longtime Elgin residents Matthew Habib and Jennifer Polit create familiar yet elevated recipes. An early favorite is the home-made quiche, including gluten-free and crustless keto varieties. All are made with seasonal produce, herbs and spices. Savory crêpes, and eggs Benedict are among other morning options, while heartier brunch choices include old-world soups and stews. Weekly specials are as diverse as chicken pot pie and lobster rolls. Polit’s family hails from Poland and the menu reflects that influence with authentic choices like pierogi, Polish sausage and potato pancakes.
On the sweet side, waffles and crêpes loaded with fruit anchor the breakfast menu. Desserts are available all day long, with fresh-made cannoli, pastries and cheese cake.
Red Poppy Bistro is currently open daily from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. and hopes to stay open later to draw a pre-dinner crowd for take-home fare in coming months.
